Spay and Neuter

What is Spaying and Neutering?

Spaying and neutering are essential surgical procedures performed to prevent pets from reproducing.

  • Neuter (for males): This surgery removes the testicles, reducing the breeding instinct and preventing male dogs and cats from fathering litters.
  • Spay (for females): This procedure removes the ovaries and uterus, preventing female dogs and cats from having litters.

Why Should You Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, are euthanized. Responsible pet owners can make a significant difference:

  • Population Control: Spaying and neutering prevent unwanted litters, helping to reduce the number of animals that end up abandoned or euthanized.
  • Health Benefits: Spaying females before their first heat cycle reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors and eliminates the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra). Neutering males reduces the risk of testicular cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate gland).
  • Behavioral Benefits: Neutering reduces behaviors associated with the mating instinct, such as roaming and aggression. Spaying eliminates heat cycles, reducing restlessness and behavioral changes in females.

Additional Benefits:

  • Longer Lifespan: Spayed and neutered pets tend to live longer, healthier lives with reduced risk of certain diseases and behavioral issues.
  • No Effect on Intelligence: These procedures do not affect a pet's intelligence, ability to learn, or natural instincts.
  • Improved Behavior: Many pets exhibit better behavior following surgical removal of their ovaries or testes, making them more enjoyable companions.

Dr. Sharma strongly advocates for neutering all male pets to promote their health and improve their behavior. Similarly, Dr. Sharma recommends spaying all female pets to enhance their overall health and ensure a better quality of life.
